The construction of Guangzhou Jiao Tong University was approved by the Guangzhou municipal development and reform commission on April 23.
The university will be created through the amalgamation of Guangzhou Maritime University, Guangzhou Civil Aviation College, Guangdong Communication Polytechnic, Guangzhou Railway Polytechnic and the Guangdong Vocational College of Post and Telecom.

The Guangzhou municipal people's government will earmark a 1,000 mu (66.67 hectare) plot for the university. In addition, it will invest 6.2 billion yuan ($954.7 million) in infrastructure construction, and 3 billion yuan in a scientific and technological innovation platform.
The overall vision is of a national key university which can provide intellectual support for the growth of the Guangzhou economy and the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Moreover, the new university will greatly improve the scientific and educational resources of Huangpu district, while pushing forward local industrial structural upgrading and optimizing the local business environment.
