Guangzhou Development District ranks second among 219 national economic development zones in comprehensive evaluation and first in scientific and technological innovation.
Both of these rankings have increased by one place in 2017, and the district's technological innovations ranked first in the country for the first time. Among the assessments in other fields, most of the indicators such as industrial base, foreign investment, and foreign trade rank among the top three.

The first-place ranking of science and technology innovation reflects the development district's remarkable results in accelerating the cultivation of innovation subjects and enhancing innovation-driven development in recent years. It has played an important role in promoting economic and social development and strongly advanced high-quality regional development.
The evaluation, led by the Ministry of Commerce, looked at 219 national economic and technological development zones in terms of industrial base, technological innovation, regional driving, ecological environmental protection and administrative efficiency.Since a previous assessment and evaluation of the national economic development zone in 2016, the Ministry of Commerce has adjusted the original eight categories of more than 80 indicators into five categories of 53 indicators.
In the past, the overall assessment criteria were more focused on the quantity of economic aggregates and production factors. However, in the new standards technological innovation is emphasized and there is a higher requirement for quality.
